Knee Pain
Sore knees on the stairs, after a run or first thing in the morning? Let's work out what's putting the load through them.
Understanding Knee Pain
Knee pain shows up in a lot of different ways. For some people it's an ache at the front of the knee that gets worse on stairs or after sitting through a movie. For others it's pain on the inside or outside of the knee after running, a stiff knee in the morning, or a knee that just doesn't feel trustworthy since a twist on the footy field.
The knee sits between the hip and the foot, and it often takes the strain when one of those isn't moving well. Tight hips, weak glutes, flat feet or a stiff ankle can all change the way force travels through the knee. That's why we look above and below the sore spot, not just at the knee.
Common causes we assess include patellofemoral pain (pain around the kneecap), iliotibial band irritation on the outside of the knee, tendon pain below the kneecap, and the general stiffness and aching that can come with age-related joint changes. Some knee problems, like a suspected ligament or meniscus tear, need imaging or a specialist opinion, and we'll tell you if we think that's the case.
Common symptoms
- Pain at the front of the knee, around or behind the kneecap
- Pain on the inside or outside of the knee after running or walking
- Knee pain going up or down stairs, squatting or kneeling
- Stiffness after sitting for a while or first thing in the morning
- Clicking or grinding with some aching
- Knee pain that started after a change in training, footwear or activity
How chiropractic may help
We start by working out where the load on your knee is coming from. That means checking how your hip, knee, ankle and foot move, watching how you squat, step and balance, and testing the strength of the muscles that control the knee. Depending on what we find, care may include gentle adjusting of the knee, hip, ankle or foot joints, soft tissue work on tight muscles around the thigh and hip, and specific strengthening exercises. Strength work matters a lot for knees, so you'll leave with a small number of exercises that suit your stage. We'll also talk about training load, footwear and how to keep doing the things you enjoy while your knee settles. Results vary between individuals, and if your knee needs imaging or a referral we'll organise it.
What to expect at Banora Chiropractic
Your first visit starts with a conversation about how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and what you'd like to get back to doing. We then examine your knee and the joints around it and run through some simple movement tests. We'll explain what we think is going on in plain language and suggest a plan. If something doesn't add up, such as significant swelling after an injury, a knee that locks or gives way, or pain that doesn't fit a mechanical pattern, we'll refer you for imaging or to your GP or a specialist.
