Back Pain Understanding Back Pain: What Your Body Might Be Telling You
Back pain is incredibly common — around 4 million Australians are dealing with it right now. Here's what might be going on and when it's worth getting checked.

If you have never seen a chiropractor before — or you have heard mixed things and are not sure what to expect — this guide is for you. At Banora Chiropractic in Tweed Heads South, we see a lot of new patients who arrive unsure of what the assessment involves, whether it will be uncomfortable, and how many visits they will need. These are all fair questions, and we would rather answer them clearly than have you guessing.
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession focused on the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions — problems involving the spine, joints, muscles, and nerves. In Australia, chiropractors are required to complete a five-year university degree (typically a Bachelor and Master of Chiropractic Science) and are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Dr James Shipway and Dr Paul Cater, the co-owners of Banora Chiropractic, both hold a Bachelor of Science in Chiropractic and a Master of Chiropractic. Between them, they bring over 30 years of combined clinical experience to the practice.
Chiropractic care is not about cracking backs for its own sake. It is about accurately assessing what is happening in your body and applying appropriate, evidence-informed care to help restore normal movement and reduce pain. The approach is hands-on and individualised — what works for one patient may not be what another needs.
The first visit is primarily an assessment, and it usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Here is what that typically involves:
We start by asking about your current concern — when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your daily life. We also ask about your general health history, any previous injuries, current medications, and relevant lifestyle factors. This is not box-ticking — understanding your full picture helps us assess and treat you more accurately.
We then examine the relevant area of your body. For most presentations, this includes assessing your posture, checking your range of movement, feeling for areas of joint restriction or muscle tension, and carrying out orthopaedic tests where relevant. If neurological involvement is a possibility — for example, if you have pain or tingling radiating into your arms or legs — we will perform neurological screening as well.
Before any treatment begins, we explain what we have found in plain language. We tell you what we believe is driving your symptoms, what we think chiropractic care can and cannot do for your situation, and what a realistic care plan looks like. If we believe your condition is better managed by another health professional — your GP, a physiotherapist, or a specialist — we will tell you that too.
If it is appropriate to begin treatment at the first visit — and it usually is — we will proceed with the relevant techniques. What this looks like depends on your presentation.
Our chiropractors are trained in a range of techniques and select the most appropriate approach for each individual patient. These include:
Patients who are nervous about manual adjustments, or who have conditions where high-velocity techniques are not appropriate, can be treated effectively using low-force and instrument-assisted approaches. We always discuss the planned approach with you beforehand.
Most chiropractic treatment is not painful. You may feel pressure during an adjustment, and some patients notice mild muscle soreness in the day or two following treatment — similar to how you might feel after exercise. This is a normal response as your body adjusts to changes in joint position and movement.
If you are in significant pain when you come in, we will work gently and appropriately for your level of comfort. We do not push through pain.
This varies depending on what is being treated, how long the problem has been present, and how your body responds to care. We give every patient an honest, individualised estimate at the first appointment rather than a generic treatment count.
As a general guide:
We reassess your progress regularly and will always discuss whether continuing care is appropriate and why. You are not locked into anything.
The most common presentations we see at Banora Chiropractic include:
No. Chiropractors in Australia are primary contact practitioners, which means you can book directly without a GP referral. If you have a referral from your GP under an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan, workers compensation, CTP, or DVA cover, please bring the relevant paperwork and we will work within that framework.
