What to Expect From Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident

It's a familiar story at the clinic: someone's involved in a car accident, feels a bit shaken but otherwise okay, and then wakes up two or three days later with a neck that barely turns and a headache that won't quit. If that's happened to you, you're not imagining it, and you're definitely not overreacting.

Why symptoms often show up later

In a collision — even a relatively minor one — your neck and upper back go through a rapid back-and-forth movement that the muscles and joints aren't braced for. This is what's commonly called whiplash. The immediate adrenaline of the moment can mask how much strain actually happened, and the inflammation and muscle guarding that follow an injury like this often build over the following 24 to 72 hours rather than hitting straight away.

So feeling "fine" right after the accident doesn't mean nothing happened. It's genuinely common for the worst of it to show up a couple of days later.

Common symptoms after a car accident

  • Neck pain and stiffness, often worse when turning your head
  • Headaches, particularly starting at the base of the skull
  • Upper back and shoulder tension
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Jaw tightness or discomfort
  • Fatigue or difficulty concentrating in the days following
  • Lower back pain, especially if the impact involved braking or bracing

What to do after a car accident

If you've been in an accident, get checked by a GP or hospital first if there's any chance of a more serious injury — that always comes first. Once anything urgent has been ruled out, don't just wait to see if the stiffness goes away on its own. Getting your spine assessed early, even if the pain feels manageable, gives you a clearer picture of what's actually going on and a plan for dealing with it properly.

If you're working through an insurance or CTP claim, your insurer or a solicitor is the right person to guide you through that process — our focus is on assessing and treating what's actually going on with your body.

How chiropractic care may help with recovery

At Banora Chiropractic, our approach to whiplash and post-accident care starts with a thorough assessment of your neck, upper back, and lower back — even if the pain feels concentrated in one spot, the forces from a collision often affect the whole spine. From there, care may include gentle cervical and thoracic adjustments to restore movement, soft tissue work to ease muscle guarding and tension, and specific exercises to support recovery and reduce the risk of ongoing stiffness. We keep techniques gentle in the early stages and adjust the approach as your body settles.

What your first visit involves

We'll take a detailed history of the accident — how it happened, what you felt at the time, and how things have changed since. We'll examine your neck and back, check your range of motion, and carry out relevant orthopaedic and neurological tests. We'll explain what we find in plain language and give you a realistic sense of what recovery is likely to look like — most whiplash-type injuries improve steadily over several weeks with the right care, though this varies from person to person.

If you've been in a car accident and something still doesn't feel right, don't wait it out. Book a consultation at our Tweed Heads South clinic or call us on (07) 5599 2322 — we'll take a proper look and let you know honestly what we find.
